Space Sand

by admin

Space sand is one of the more popular products at Spectrum Scientifics. It is ordinary sand that has been dyed and exposed to trimethylhyroxysilane vapors. These vapors make the surface of the sand hydrophobic, which means it will not bond with the water.

Watch the Space Sand in action:

Sand on Mars has similar properties to Space Sand as it has not had any real exposure to water in millions of years. If Martian sand is exposed to water for a short while it would quickly lose its hydrophobic properties.

Space Sand’s hydrophobia is not invincible either. Exposing it to soap, chlorine, alchohol, and other chemicals can quickly strip away the hydrophobic properties of Space Sand’s surface revert it to ordinary sand.

You can sculpt, make sand letters, stalagmites, and all sorts of shapes by arranging the Space Sand underwater!

  4. I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this but do you know if I can pick up sand from our local beach and place it in a brackish aquarium with a red claw crab? In addition would you know how would i clean the sand before placing it in the aquarium? i perform weekly water changes and vacuum up the gravel, is it possible to vacuum the sand? also is having sand better than having gravel? Is there anything else you think I need to do with sand that i wouldn’t do with gravel? Thanks
