See you in 2009: The International Year of Astronomy!
by adminThe holiday season is winding down, and at Spectrum we are looking forward to the start of the new year. Especially because 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy.
Loosely based some 400 years after Galileo made his own version of the first telescope (which we’ve blogged about being invented in 1608. Galileo was, as we all know, the first one to point his telescope at the heavens. Or at least the first person to write about it.
The International Year of Astronomy, or IYA, will be full of Astronomy related events and projects and international events. You can also read about astronomers
and what they do (starting January 1), push for Dark Skies, join in a year-long solar observation project, or just listen to a daily astronomy podcast.
There’s the chance for students in the UK to get free telescope in their schools. Students can write an essay on what Astronomy means to society and go to Paris for the presentation. Or you can just have a look at pictures of Galileo’s surviving notes and astronomy equipment.
You don’t have to go to any special events to celebrate. Just break out that old telescope, or better yet consider getting a new one! The skies are up there and waiting to be seen!
