Scanimation Books

by admin

A couple of popular books we sell are Gallop and the more human oriented Swing. Both of these books use a nifty technology called Scanimation to produce the appearance of motion.

Swing!

Gallop

Scanimation is actually a new twist on an old optics technique known as Moire Patterns, where sets of parallel lines placed over each other produce interference patterns and interesting optical effects. The Scanimation books are designed so that one pattern forms over the other when you turn the page, causing the image to become animated. The process of making a Scanimation is a bit more complicated than the simple Moire Patterns, but the optics rules behind it are essentially the same.

For more details, let’s hear it from the author of the Scanimation books: Rufus Butler

  1. Very good article. I’ve found your blog via Yahoo and I’m really glad about the information you provide in your posts. Btw your sites layout is really messed up on the Kmelon browser. Would be really great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the great work!
