Butterfly kits are a wonderful way for children to see metamorphosis up close. The kit comes with a mesh pop-up butterfly habitat along with a care and instruction guide and a mail-in coupon for Live Painted Lady Caterpillars & food. The caterpillars will arrive in their first metamorphosis. This can take from 1-3 weeks for delivery and should be opened immediately upon arrival and placed in the Butterfly Garden. Within 7-10 days the caterpillars will undergo a more thorough transformation into chrysalides which will hang head first.
This is when the caterpillar undergoes its greatest changes. While in that chrysalide the caterpillar is changing rapidly into a butterfly. This should also take another 7-10 days. The butterflies will then emerge. Enjoy their beauty for a while, then release them back into nature.
Butterfly kits are a great experience for small children, and are good for kids ages 4+. Every child should experience seeing metamorphosis first hand.
