Bismuth
by adminSpectrum sells very attractive Bismuth crystals, probably one of the more expensive geology items we have in that size, but well worth it due to its magnificent color!

Bismuth is different from most of the rocks and minerals that we sell because it is an Element. It is as basic a compound you can get. With any other rock or mineral you can say it is made of a mixture of silicon, carbon, iron etc. but Bismuth is made solely of Bismuth, albeit with some oxidation (see below)
The Bismuth crystals Spectrum sells are artificially formed. Bismuth is mined and them melted. When it cools under the right circumstances it forms the box-like crystals like you see in the picture. The colors are not Bismuth;s normal color, but form when the Bismuth oxidizes. Its Bismuth’s version of rust!
Bismuth is usually obtained as a byproduct from smelting other metals. It is also mined, but the smelting process actually produces more Bismuth than the mines.
Its is non-toxic, and as a result is being tested as a replacement for lead in many applications such as cosmetics, lead fishing weights, solders, and much more. Bismuth is a soft and fragile element, so care should be taken with any samples you have.
Bismuth crystals that Spectrum cells are formed in labs in Europe and shipped around the world for you to enjoy.
